There is an urgent need for HIV guidelines that do not vary from country to country. Rather than guidelines for developed countries and those for developing countries, they should be for resourceful areas and resource poor areas. For in a developed country also you can have an area with limited access and in a developing country also you can have a hospital with all facilites availeble. ?

Pediatric HIV guidelines rolled out in November 2006 with a lot of fan-fare and now HIV infected children were getting treatment free of cost. This was a huge relief to lot of families affected with HIV. However it it now 2009 and sadly we are not seeing anything being done for prevention of HIV in children. With rest of the world especially USA and western Europe showing that HIV in children can be prevented they have less than 500 children born HIV positive every year, why cant we implement the same here. India is a vast country with a population biggest in the world. We have many children dying of malnutrition and infections. HIV is adding enormous burden on the economic as well health of the country. Though we are doing our best to treat these children, why cant we give them quality of life by preventing infection It is not that nothing can be done- infact with treatment, chance that HIV will be transmitted from the parent to the child can be brought down to less than 1. And it does not take really too much, just HIV drugs to the baby and child and rational feeding to the baby be it breast feeding or other feeds. Motivation and implementation are needed. In the long run, this may be a cheaper way to handle HIV rather than giving life long free treatment. It is time for the country to wake up and begin its step towards prevention.
